What makes a website AI-ready?

An AI-ready website is one that AI search engines can access, crawl, understand, extract from, and trust. Most websites fail at least two of these five dimensions — usually because they were built for traditional search engines and human visitors, not AI models. The technical decisions that made sense for Google in 2018 may actively block AI crawlers in 2026.

This framework maps the five dimensions of AI readiness and gives you a checklist for each. Fixing all five dimensions typically takes 2–4 weeks of part-time work. The payoff: every page you publish after that is pre-optimized for AI citation. You fix the foundation once, and every future page inherits the readiness.

The five dimensions are sequential. Access is the gate — without it, nothing else matters. Crawl efficiency determines whether AI indexes your best pages or wastes time on low-value URLs. Understanding tells AI what your content means. Extraction determines whether AI can use it. Trust determines whether AI believes it. Each dimension unlocks the next.

Dimension 1: Access — can AI crawlers reach your pages?

Access is the gate. If AI crawlers cannot reach your pages, nothing else matters. Fix robots.txt to explicitly allow ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Anthropic-AI, and Claude-Web. Verify with AI Crawler Checker. This is a 5-minute fix that unlocks the entire AI readiness pipeline.

Dimension 2: Crawl — can AI efficiently index your content?

Submit an XML sitemap that includes your pillar pages and recent content. While AI crawlers parse LLMs.txt as their primary discovery tool, a sitemap provides redundancy and covers pages not yet in your LLMs.txt. Internal linking structure also matters — AI crawlers follow links to discover related content.

Dimension 3: Understand — can AI parse what your content means?

Access and crawl get AI to your content. Structured data tells AI what it is looking at. Add JSON-LD schema to every page: Article for content pages, FAQPage for FAQ sections, HowTo for guides, Product for product pages, Organization for your About page, and BreadcrumbList for site hierarchy.

Schema markup is machine-readable metadata that helps AI models understand content context. A page with Article schema tells AI 'this is an article, extract the headline, author, date, and body.' A page without schema forces AI to guess — and AI guesses conservatively, citing less. Schema removes the guesswork.

Dimension 4: Extract — is your content structured for AI citation?

Understanding gets AI to your content. Extraction determines whether AI can use it. Structure every page with: direct-answer opening (25–120 words answering the core question), one data point per section, comparison blocks for definition queries, structured lists instead of long paragraphs, and FAQ sections with user-phrased questions.
